What is Trauma?

Trauma is the occurrence of something that wasn't supposed to happen or something that was supposed to happen but didn't.  I believe that most of us have been impacted by trauma and may be unaware or not fully aware of its impact. It colours the lens through which you view yourself and the world, disrupting your emotional, social, biological, psychological, and spiritual well-being.  As such, trauma-informed interventions are tailored based on the understanding that almost all of us have experienced or have been impacted by trauma either directly or indirectly.

Impact of Trauma

Did you know that trauma can take many forms, not only  PTSD (Post-Traumatic Syndrome Disorder)?  Depression, anger, and self-blame are a few ways in which trauma may show up in your life. It further impacts our ability:

  • To show up authentically

  • To engage fully in healthy relationships

  • To trust ourselves and others

  • To feel safe â€‹â€‹

Healing from Trauma

Trauma-Informed Therapy

Trauma-informed therapy focuses specifically on your safety. It is intentionally slow to allow you to process the emotions and thoughts tied to the negatively impacting event.  This therapy also encourages developing compassion and kindness for yourself, a skill that may have been lost, or you may not feel deserving of, as a result of that event. Taking all this into consideration, we will journey through the three stages of trauma-informed therapy:

  • Developing safety and stabilization

    • In this stage the goal is to build healthy boundaries, trust and security with self and others.

  • Remembering and Grieving

    • Here you can learn that healing does not necessarily mean going back to the traumatic event, rather, it focuses on identifyinging and processing the emotions attached to the event.

  • Reconnecting and Integrating

    • You can work toward developing skills and capacity to engage in relationships with others.

Each stage takes time. How much time? Honestly, it depends on your unique circumstances. I can say this, it cannot be rushed. This allows you to grow towards recovery and rediscovery. Rediscovery is key because life after trauma may look different from what you once knew. We will work together to recognize that all is not lost and rediscover the resilient you.
